Club Awards

Club Award – President’s Trophy

The President’s Trophy is an award given by the current President of the Capilano Rugby Club. It is awarded to a club member who in this particular year, the President was able to lean on often for advice, help, discussion, etc.

Club Award – Bob Spray Award for Capilano Spirit

Bob Spray is known as the Father of the Canadian Rugby Union and served as its President from 1965 to 1972, following stints as President of the BCRU and Chairman of the BC Referees Society. He emigrated from England in 1947 and immediately began his Canadian rugby career as a referee which he did for 8 years. His contribution to the game has been recognized throughout the country and in BC as a member in the builder category of both the Rugby Hall of Fame and Sports Hall of Fame. He was a great supporter of Vancouver rugby with friends throughout all the clubs, but as a long-time resident and Parks Board member of West Vancouver, he held a special fondness for the Capilanos. On the UK tour in 1973, Capilanos were hosted by East Grinstead RFC, Mr. Spray’s home club. In reciprocation of this friendship he was award an honorary Life Membership in the club and the grandstand field, completed after his death in 1991, was named in his honour. Bob Spray loved the spirit of this club and he helped to define the criteria upon which this trophy in his name would be awarded.

Club Award – 3rd Division Achievement Award

This award was created to reward club members in lower divisions who often get overlooked for club playing awards. The contributions on and off the field from social rugby players needed to be recognized as they helped make the club a better place. The award is to a player in the lower divisions who has shown leadership, perseverance, and determination on the field as well as a continued contribution to the club off the field. This isn’t just another playing MVP award as it can be anyone who shows positive Capilano qualities and puts time and effort in volunteering at the club.
