Sr. Men's Awards

Chris Zuehlke Award – Most Improved Player

Chris Zuehlke was an original member of the North Shore All Blacks Junior team in the late 1960s and played with the Capilanos until his death in 1975, at age 26, as the result of neck injuries suffered in a collapsed scrum. Chris was well known for his physical prowess on the football and rugby fields of North Van, but his true love was baseball. He represented the city on numerous Babe Ruth all-star teams and coached and umpired Little League at the park next to Carson Graham school that now bears his name. One of the things that he always talked about was watching someone, be it a major league ball player or a junior rugby player, grow in stature, through hard work and perseverance. The Chris Zuehlke Trophy is appropriately named to recognize a player’s determination to improve.

Ozzie Gjerdalen Award – Rookie of the Year

Ozzie Gjerdalen played his rugby for the North Shore All Blacks and coached for the Capilanos for many years, both Senior and Junior men. He also co-coached a North Shore gold medal winning team, comprised of mainly Capilano juniors, in the 1983 BC Summer Games. As a player he was known for his unrelenting fierceness and determination and a major contributor to the 1955 Rounsefell Cup winning team. As a coach, Ozzie was demanding but committed to the development of up-and-coming rugby talent. The club lost one of its best with his death in 2009, but his unwavering encouragement of the younger players lives on in the spirit of the Ozzie Gjerdalen Trophy.

John “Stormy” Salkeld Front Row of the Year Award

Stormy, as he was commonly known, first played for the Caps in 1992 after playing for East Coast bays in New Zealand. He played for Caps Premier Men in a side that included Tim Murdy, the Big Weiner, Ronnie Baker, Wiggler, Brett Stacey, Clayton Wick, ET, all legends of the fine club Capilano. He headed back to ECB and after winning the senior 1st Championship he returned to Caps for a number of years in between travelling the globe until his passing in December 1999. Stormy was known for his energy on and off the field and his ability to be-friend everyone that met him. His rugby took him from the shores of East Coast bays, down to the NZ Army then onto Capilano in Canada, Cottisloe in Western Australia, Wanderers in the UK, and finally in Holland. He was always one to put his hand up and not out when there were things to do both on and off the field. He always gave 101% and never took a backward step. His contribution to rugby was second to none, thus having trophies named after him in NZ, Canada, and Australia. Not bad for a guy who was only 30 years young. Stormy Salkeld was not only a rugby player but an incredible person. Players today need to look at their past players and legends of their club. Hard work will always pay off; the work you put in will always get you results at the end. It’s the same as an exam; you won’t pass unless you put the work in! Being a Capilano if for Life; your fellow player next to you is your family. Stormy would always make sure you knew that. The recipient of the Stormy Award is a person who has not only a legend to live up to, but they have to live up to their own expectations.

Alex Mahood Trophy – 1st XV Forward of the Year

Alex Mahood was the face of the Capilano Rugby Club from its inception in 1969 to his untimely death in 2007. He coached the club in its first years and then went on to expand his role to do pretty much everything else that was necessary to get teams on the field. You are sitting in the room named in his honour. He played for the North Shore All Blacks in the front and back rows from 1946 to 1964, including with the 1955 Rounsefell Cup winning team, before become the team’s coach. As a player he was known as uncompromising, and was probably very fortunate that in his day referees were not equipped with yellow and red cards. The Forward of the Year award recognizes the great qualities that epitomized Alex Mahood as a player and a Capilano.

Bill Ewing Trophy – 1st XV Back of the Year

Bill Ewing was the first President of Capilano RFC and the reported instigator of the North Shore All Blacks and West Van Barbarians amalgamation in 1969. At that time Bill coached the Barbs following his playing career as well as having significant involvement in Junior football on the North Shore. Work took Bill out of province shortly after the formation of the Capilano club but after many years away he retired to live in North Van, and is again a regular fixture at Klahanie home games. It is not just for his place in club history, but also for his attributes as a rugby player, as a big, strong, and fast centre, the Bill Ewing Trophy is awarded to Back of the Year.
