What are the PRCS?

The Provincial Regional Tournament (PRC) is a province wide regional tournament with pathways to the Provincial BC teams, the BC Bears. Anyone can try out to play for their region. Ours is the Vancouver Rugby Union (VRU) which covers from Whiterock, all of Vancouver, the North Shore, Sunshine coast, and all the way up to Whistler. Sub regions within the VRU are South, Central and North.

There are some significant changes this year.

The PRC tournament, which will take place this year at Shawnigan July 5-6, has been reduced in size, made more elite, and aligned in age brackets with the Canadian national teams. There will be only one PRC team for each age band for each region in the province (No VRU South, Central and North any more). The age bands are:

U15(2010/2011)

U17 (2008/2009)

U19 (2006/2007)

You will begin practices in your local sub region, Vancouver North.

PRC coaches will be doing scouting at the regional practices and ID sessions. For the boys, the VRU sub regions for practices are South, Central, and North. For the girls this is North and South – though the girls may be combined if registration numbers are low.

What is the North West Rugby Cup?

The North West Rugby Cup (NWRC) is new tournament taking place at Bayside the same weekend.

This tournament will be more inclusive and have age brackets that align with club rugby, U14, U16 and u18 (as with club rugby, U18 is allowed to have up to 5 u19 players – eg, someone who graduates from Grade 12 being almost 19). It will also be a place for the younger U14 players to participate. Still great rugby and lots of fun, but not as expensive or elite.

Practices and ID sessions/Selection

Everyone for both tournaments will begin required practices together in your local region, starting June 2nd on Mondays and Wednesdays leading up to the June 14th selection tournament at Bayside after

which final PRC teams will be made. VRU North rosters for the June 14th Selection Tournament will be announced the week before the tournament. Non selection does not exclude you from the NWRC.

After the June 14th selection tournament, the selected PRC players will be practicing elsewhere (likely Bayside) with the PRC coaches until the PRC tournament.

Everyone else will continue practicing locally, adjust to club age banding - even those who did not play the tournament, with the same local coaches, competing for spots in the North West Rugby Cup.

Optional Pre Practice/ID sessions are available for those who want them on Mondays and Wednesdays 630-8 pm starting May 14th

These are optional, all ages, non contact sessions, as many of you are still busy with school rugby. However, not everyone gets school rugby and would love an opportunity to practice. Non attendance at these pre practices will not affect your selection chances.

Required practices start June 2nd running on Mondays and Wednesdays

U15 boys 600pm

U17 boys 600pm

U19 boys 630pm

All girls 600-730 pm

Note other regions practice on different days.

Locations are still up in the air as grass fields are at a premium and Klahanie is closed after May. Please expect there to be a lot of gravel both at the Capilano as well as at Heywood (the old Lucas Center).

See the VRU Website for more information for the whole of VRU: https://www.vancouverrugbyunio...

There is also an Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/vanc...

Please register to join via Team Snap. Each age group is listed in this link. It is $29 for ID sessions. When selected, PRC players will pay one fee (not sorted yet but around $500), the NWRC is significantly less expensive (less than $100 but no kit).

This is the registration link, found also in the link tree of the Instagram page as well as on the website. https://www.vancouverrugbyunio...

I hope that clarifies some of the questions that are floating around. Team information is shared with registered players via team snap, so please do register right away.

Thanks all
