Snowcaps Match Report

Snowcaps finish off season in “style” - A 9-try effort to win 9-1.

Snowcaps showed up in full force on Sunday and a fair crowd of supporters were there to cheer them on. Caps played the Burnaby Twilighters, always a feisty opponent. Matt Plant and Chris Robinson put out a call to arms to help the often undermanned Snowcaps and the call was answered.

Burnaby opened the scoring with a strong run up the middle that ended in a score. It was a good effort and one wondered if it was a sign of things to come. Caps answered shortly after though with a long run by Wighty, Brad Wightman, who has played for all Capilano Division teams this season. Brad looks young and plays young but he is in his fourth decade. Wighty was joined by Jesse Ryan, Gary Cartwright, who is returning from injury, Liam Burdick, and Chile, who have played for the 2nd division side most of the season. All of the club recruits played within the spirit of the game.

Wighty took a heavy, but clean hit, from a Burnaby player and acknowledged that these old guys can still hit! Several Snowcaps have been helping the Capilano Second Division side field a full side due to a plague of injuries throughout the club. Mike Johnson, todays referee, has also been playing Seconds but with a hockey style injury to his face he wasn’t available to play so he put in good shift blowing the whistle! Today was payback time with the club helping strengthen the Snowcaps. A few players can really make a difference in old boys rugby. It brought back memories of Gibson’s legendary Bill Henderson who played for Caps top side on Saturday then scored four tries on Sunday for the Snowcaps against Evergreens. That was a few years ago but I remember it well! Caps have many retired players that could really help the Snowcaps. Old Boys rugby is a lot of fun and helps keep the body young albeit a bit bruised. I was impressed with several regular Snowcaps in this game the speedy winger Ivan looked dangerous whenever he got the ball. Chile scored a World Class style try chipping over his opponent and dribbling it to the in goal for the score. Panda and Matt Plant have to be two of the worlds largest Centers! Both are coming back from injury and I’m sure they enjoyed themselves. Dave Walsh would be an awesome lock if only he could put on some weight! Big Todd and Big Andy are new recruits and they put in a good shift as well.

Kenny, or Argy Kenito, as he is called put on a great feed! I was provided with a large plate full. I am always open to incentives and suggestions for my write ups. Food and Beverages are always welcome!!! The beer up as always in Masters Rugby was a highlight of the day. Thanks to Burnaby for the game. The have a co-ed side with a couple of women players one of whom was unfortunately injured we wish her a speedy recovery. Thanks to Mike J for refereeing. Today the pitch took a beating due to a huge mini jamboree on Saturday. Hopefully Tim can get it ready for an exhibition game between Oshawa and Capilano selects next Sunday. These games are always fun to watch so let’s get out and support our CAPILANO SELECTS.

Caps for life
