Youth Match Report - July 2, 2023

Capilano RFC Youth Rugby hosted Giggleswick School from Yorkshire, England on Sunday July 2nd and came away with a well deserved victory by a score of 34-12.
The Cap/Vancouver North Provincial Championship side looked very impressive. The local side got away to two early unconverted tries before the visitors struck back with two tries, the second one converted to take a 12-10 lead. The Cap/Van north side then turned up the heat on the visitors and stretched the lead with some very good running rugby. The visitors were able to exploit the locals occasionally with some excellent tactical kicking that was not always fielded well and gave the visitors hope. In the end though the Cap/Van side had too much bench strength and outside speed and won handily. A turning point was when the English side tried to run from their own goal line and the Cap scrum half intercepted on about the 10 meter line and went in to score. This try seemed to take the steam away from the English side. I was impressed with the tackling and cover play by our youngsters who will hopefully do well in the Provincials.
The Giggleswich side only arrived in Vancouver yesterday so they could have been a bit Jet lagged and they did not have a deep bench like the locals. They go on to play Vancouver West next then on to Kamloops. They will likely be stronger in their next two games. The Capilano parents, led by Julia Wilby, did a great job of hosting and feeding the visitors, that also included a girls field hockey team that played West Vancouver before getting to Klahanie. It was great to enjoy some entertaining rugby on a beautiful Canada Day Weekend. The referee, Mr. Saro Turner and his assistants Mark Abercrombie and Jeremy Duncan did a fine job controlling the game. The games next week at UBC should be well worth watching. Congratulations to the Vancouver North squad and their coaches and best wishes next week.
